Finding Uneven Attic Insulation using a Thermal Camera

Thermal imaging can be particularly useful for identifying insulation irregularities that may not be readily visible from within the attic due to limited accessibility, storage, low clearances, or the general depth and distribution of blown insulation. One of the more common conditions identified with a thermal-imaging camera during a home inspection is uneven attic insulation. Blown insulation is often thinner near the eaves or may become displaced over time by service work within the attic. Attic access covers and pull-down stair openings are also frequently missing insulation or weather-stripping. 

​A thermal camera detects surface temperature differences and converts them into a visual image. Under favorable conditions, areas with insufficient insulation often appear noticeably warmer or cooler than surrounding ceiling surfaces, depending upon whether the home is being heated or cooled at the time of the inspection. Areas with missing or low-density insulation can differ in apparent temperature by 5 to 10 degrees or more relative to adjacent insulated areas. These temperature differences can make insulation deficiencies stand out clearly on thermal images when conditions are suitable.

Uneven attic insulation is generally considered a minor maintenance or energy-efficiency concern because corrective measures are often relatively straightforward. In some cases, insulation can simply be redistributed more evenly. However, navigating attic spaces can be hazardous due to limited footing, low clearances, exposed wiring, and the potential to damage ceilings below. Evaluation and repairs should be performed only by qualified individuals familiar with attic safety.
